Making the Move from W2 to Small Business Ownership

The transition from salaried employment to owning a small business is one that many people consider for years before acting on it. When they do make the move, the work that happens in those early months, getting the right structure in place and building the right foundation, tends to have a lasting effect on how the business develops.

At Dunn CPA Firm, helping people navigate this transition is something we do regularly. In Tom’s experience, the two things that make the biggest difference early on are finding the right business model and getting the right administrative support in place.

Starting With the Right Business Model

A business model is more than a revenue strategy. It encompasses how the business generates income, delivers its service or product, manages time and sustains itself over the long run. Two businesses in the same industry can operate under completely different models, and the right fit for one owner may create constant friction for another.

This is where the work begins. Before entity structure, tax strategy, and administrative setup, the first question is whether the model itself is a good fit for the person building it.

Tom calls this part of the process accounting psychotherapy. It involves an honest look at how someone is wired: how they work, what they can sustain over time, where their energy comes from and what kinds of demands are likely to wear them down. A business model that looks sound on paper but runs against a person’s natural tendencies is difficult to maintain over years. Getting that alignment right from the beginning tends to make everything that follows more manageable.

Building the Right Administrative Foundation

The second piece is administrative support, and it is one that new business owners often underestimate coming out of a W2 role.

In salaried employment, accounting, payroll and compliance are typically handled by someone else. That infrastructure does not follow you into self-employment. Building the right support structure from the start, the right bookkeeping, the right systems, and the right level of CPA involvement for where the business is, allows you to focus on the actual work of running and growing the business rather than getting buried in the back office.

Getting this wrong early creates problems that tend to compound. Getting it right creates a foundation your business can grow from.

What to Expect From the Transition

Moving from a W2 position into small business ownership is a genuine adjustment. The financial structure is different, the accountability is different and the day-to-day experience of work is different in ways that can be hard to fully appreciate until you are in it.

One thing Tom has observed consistently is that people do not always arrive at this transition with the motivation fully formed. Sometimes they come in uncertain, unsure of what the right model even looks like for them. But when the right structure starts to take shape and early results begin to show, the energy follows. The motivation tends to build with the momentum, not before it.

At Dunn CPA Firm, we work with people at every stage of this transition. If you are considering making the move, or if you have recently started a business and want to make sure the foundation is solid, we are glad to help you think through both the model and the support structure that will give it the best chance of succeeding.

We help people transition from a W-2 job into owning their own small business all the time.

And it really kind of starts with their business model. We help them find the right business model for them.

And there’s just some basic techniques and things that you can use to help somebody there. And then also providing them, helping them get the right admin support for their business. So it’s really those are the two basic things. There is a lot of.

I call it accounting psychotherapy that goes into that business model with the right business model for somebody because you got to kind of know your own psychology and then build that business model around your own psychology.
